I have 5 4×8 white boards that I use regularly in my consulting practice. Two are in my office, and three are portable so I can use them at the client’s location. One of the best tools I’ve found for for visual thinking has been “The Back of the Napkin”. This book by Dan Roam is a great resource for helping people think with pictures, discover and develop mew ideas, solve problems in unexpected ways, and improve their ability to share insights. Roam’s book covers: 3 basic visual thinking tools, 4 steps of the visual thinking process, 5 questions to help open the mind’s eye, and 6 ways we see and show. Even people who think they aren’t artists can quickly grasp the fundamentals of the power of visual thinking. He recently released a companion book, “Unfolding the Napkin” which is his four-day workshop put into workbook form. I’m certainly no artist, but the freedom of a blank white board, a few markers, and some simple tools provides me with results that bring clarity to often foggy problems.
